To set the Virus Database Location go to Database->Location.... Default value is:
/usr/share/clamav
The Virus Database Location can be either a file or a directory.
To view the Virus Database that you have currently selected, click on the Database tab and the Virus Database page should appear as shown below (it may take a while for the Virus Patterns to load).
To view the details of a Virus Pattern, double-click on the Virus Pattern.
You can also search for a particular Virus Pattern by
entering its name or partial name in the
Find prompt and then press ENTER
.
It is important to have an up to date Virus Database since new viruses are often discovered and reported on a daily basis.
The files in the Virus Database directory are called Virus Database files, they contain a list of Virus Patterns. You can get the latest Virus Database files from a number of sources.
If you already have new Virus Database files on a local directory or disk, then you can simply copy them to the Virus Database directory. Otherwise it is recommended that you update the Virus Database from the Internet.
To update the Virus Database from the Internet you need to
have the virus database update program called
freshclam
(part of the
Clam Antivirus package),
and have it set up as follows:
su
chmod +s /usr/bin/freshclam
chown clamav.clamav /usr/bin/freshclam
chown -R clamav.clamav /usr/share/clamav
exit
If the above operations were performed successfully then at this point you can run AVScan as any user to update the Virus Database from the Internet.
To update the Virus Database from the Internet,
click on the Update button. AVScan will automatically call
freshclam
to update the Virus Database from
the Internet and its progress will be displayed on the Status
Bar.
If you have a slower network connection (dialup/modem) then these updates may take several hours to complete, because the Virus Database files can be very large in size and take a long time to download.
